Greenweb

Council's Greenweb program, which is part of a Sydney-wide strategy (Green Web Sydney), aims to protect and enhance the Shire's native plant and animal populations by identifying key areas of bushland habitat and establishing corridors to connect them. These corridors make it easier for the movement of both plants and animals which is essential to maintain healthy populations and diversity.

The Australian bush and its wildlife are entangled to a degree that we are only just beginning to understand. There are many unique and complex partnerships and associations. Many plants rely on specific insects and animals for pollination and seed dispersal to ensure the continuation of their species. Likewise many insects and animals are dependent on a single plant species for their survival.

Rainbow Lorikeet

Although Sutherland Shire's Greenweb incorporates both public and private lands, its main target is private property owners within the Shire, particularly those within the Greenweb network. In a complementary program council's Bushcare program undertakes bushland regeneration activities on public land in Sutherland Shire.

Participation

The focus of Greenweb is on voluntary participation with incentives to encourage people to participate. This involves council's Greenweb Officer inspecting the resident's property and providing a free "Garden Consultation". These visits may involve identifying appropriate native plant species for the area, appropriate Nest Boxlandscaping to encourage native fauna, identifying invasive weed species and answering any other environmental or horticultural questions that the resident may have.

Participation can be as simple as adding a few native plants, removing invasive weeds, installing nest boxes, or retaining and enhancing natural features in your yard like logs or rocks which make great habitats for many types of native animals.

Appropriate information regarding the above is forwarded to the resident and regular newsletters are also sent. Participating residents have access to free native tube plants from council's nursery and in some instances a second greenwaste bin and/or bush regeneration bags for free weed collection. Residents can also receive a free Greenweb sign to acknowledge their efforts and participation in the program.

Council funds a number of initiatives to support Greenweb.  This has included a program where owners of private property in Sutherland Shire's Greenweb network were able to apply for financial assistance to support ecological restoration work on bushland in their property.  For an update on this program, contact council's Customer Service Centre and ask to speak to a Greenweb Officer.

Schools

Schools also participate in the Greenweb program.  They can play a vital role in the creation of wildlife corridors or by enhancing existing bushland in their grounds.  Educational talks about Greenweb (bushland and biodiversity) as well as planting days and bush regeneration works are being undertaken in schools throughout Sutherland Shire.
